Family History

Evan and Cassie's children are the 7th generation of our family to live on a farm in Burt County, Nebraska.  The first generation came to Nebraska around 1880 from Ohio and Iowa, and as far away as Sweden, drawn to new farmland made available by the Homestead Act.  The farms we call the "Homeplace" and the "Ponderosa" have been in family hands more than 100 years.  Our family pictured above is fortunate to have descended from those previous generations to be farming the same land in Burt County today.  There is much more that could be said about our farming ancestors, but we will leave most of that for another venue.
More recently, in 2007 Evan joined Chuck's farming business to start his farming career, and in 2011 we formed E & C Myers Farms, Inc.  We are corn and soybean farmers near the town of Lyons in Northeast Nebraska.  We perform most farming operations ourselves, with Evan doing the spraying, fertilizing, harvest trucking, and most shop and mechanic work, and Chuck doing the planting and combining along with taking care of the books.  They both drive semi trucks hauling grain from the fields to storage and later to market.

Career History

  • Chuck and Gloria:
Chuck has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Ag Economics and Ag Education.  After college, Chuck and Gloria came back to the farm.  While still farming, early in his career Chuck also worked as a Professional Farm Manager for more than 60 landowners in eastern Nebraska and western Iowa.  He is a graduate of the Nebraska LEAD program, was appointed to the Nebraska Soybean Board (NSB) by Governor Nelson, and subsequently was appointed to the national United Soybean Board (USB) by U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Ann Veneman, where he ultimately served as Chairman.  Most recently Chuck was elected to the Nebraska Hall of Agricultural Achievement.
Gloria has an Associate Degree in Accounting.  She's worked at various jobs during her career, including as secretary at a law office, as payroll clerk at an underground communications facility, and as City Clerk for the town of Lyons.  Her current job is with the local bank working as a Mortgage Loan Specialist.  She served 14 years on the local School Board.  Over the years, she's done many tasks on the farm, including tractor and truck driving, running for parts, helping shuttle equipment, bringing lunch to the field, and generally helping wherever she's needed.  She also takes care of the grounds of the Ponderosa home and building site.
Chuck and Gloria are parents to Evan and Lauren.  Evan's bio is below.  Lauren has a degree in Fashion Design, Journalism and Advertising and is currently a Senior Account Manager for a Medical Personnel Placement firm.  Lauren's husband, Ben, has a degree in Project Management and works in the Animal Health Division of a well-known pharmaceutical company.  Lauren and Ben reside in Omaha.  Chuck and Gloria live on the "Ponderosa" farm north of Lyons.

  • Evan and Cassie:
Evan was chosen as one of four Nebraska FFA Star Farmers his senior year of high school.  He has an Associates degree in Diesel Farm Mechanics and Technology.  He worked for a local John Deere dealership as a shop technician for four years before returning to the farm in 2007.  He was appointed to Central Valley Ag's Visionary Advisor group and occasionally helps CVA's grain department load grain shuttle trains.  He manages the farm shop for equipment maintenance and repair, and is also the lead in utilizing technology in the farming operation.  Evan was recently elected to serve on the local School Board.
Cassie received an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Computer Aided Drafting & Design and a Bachelor's Degree in Business Management.  After college she worked at Valmont Industries, maker of Valley Center Pivots, and currently works at Central Valley Ag.  She started her career with CVA in the Marketing Division, but now works in the Information Technology Division as a Software Systems Trainer.  She's learned a lot about the agricultural industry from her jobs, which carries over into having a better understanding of the farming operation. Evan, Cassie and their 3 girls reside on the "Homeplace" farm west of Lyons.

Often, a farmer is called a "jack of all trades".  Farming today demands a wide range of skills.  A farmer must have general knowledge and skills in agronomy, economics, mechanics, construction, welding, financial planning, heavy equipment operation, negotiating, accounting, communication, electronics, marketing, computer technology, weather, chemistry, leadership, and so on.  If a farmer has livestock, his skills have to include animal husbandry, animal science and veterinary skills.  Our family, working together, has the experience to cover most, if not all, of those skills listed above.
